It is great to understand that the movie’s theme and aesthetics should be captured through the design. It takes a whole a lot of planning to create the perfect poster for a blockbuster movie. Get brief about the movie
You should know everything about the film. From its cast to its music, to its director, all elements of the film should be clear to you. Read the script if possible, or just get an idea of what the story is about. Talk to the director. Ask him his concept behind making the film. This would help things set straight for you and would put the right concepts in your mind. Watch some video clips if they are available.
Research, compare and contrast
Not just knowing about the movie is enough, but you would also need to do your own research. For example, if a film is based on a love story; you need to see which other similar films have created their poster of a love story. Check out which ones you like, and which ones you don’t. See which ones the audience liked the most. Compare poster of old films to new films. See how modern you want your design to feel, or whether it should give a touch of the ‘old’ times.
Brainstorm on the idea
If you have made an effort to do the above two tasks, there are high chances that you would have some ideas right after it. Try to jot down pointers about the information you have. Now create rough sketches on what you would want to include in your design. Think simple and try to add an element of mystery in your work. The theme should tell the audience at first glance at what the film is based on. Whether it’s a horror story, a rom-com, suspense or thriller, or serious events based movie, the person who looks at the poster should know about the theme.
Try to make it very attractive, so that people see it and get interested in the upcoming movie. Don’t give too much in the poster, as that way, they will lose interest. Keep the right balance between revealing too much and showing the right elements.
