3 Tips to Create Timeless Logo

For a brand, a logo is more than just a piece of graphic design work. It is an identity, a symbol or a visual element through which their customers recognize the brand. For a brand, logo design is perhaps the most important part of brand identity. Since it is the brand’s identity, a logo design needs to be distinct and memorable.

There may be a lot of competitors out there against your brand in your industry. So, how do you differentiate your brand from others? The answer is logo design. This is why it is important for a brand’s logo to be unique. The logo must be easily recognizable and distinguishable because as a brand you need to create your place in the industry.

Another important factor in creating a memorable logo design is timeless, i.e. how well the logo will stand the test of time. As time passes, industry changes. Behavior and perspectives of consumers also change. The design trends never remain the same either. In such a situation where the only thing that is constant is “change”, you need to create a logo design that will be relevant throughout the time. For that, here are some tips to create a timeless logo design.

Simplicity

There are two types of logo designs, logotype (consists of text) and logomark (consists of a symbol). A logo can also be a combination of both. In either case, the shape of symbol or the text must be simple. Simplicity doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use commonly used typeface, like Arial, in the logo. Simplicity here means the shape or text must be quickly readable and recognizable. If it requires a few minutes for someone to understand or read the logo, then it is better to simplify it further.

Limited Use of Color

Using gradient or too many colors in a logo design is not a good idea. It makes logo even more complicated and difficult to be memorized. When it comes to colors, it is safe to stick with 2-3 colors. However, some brands go beyond that, as Google uses 4 different colors in their logo. Using gradient in logo design makes it hard to recognize on mediums where the logo is printed or displayed in grayscale, for example, a photocopy.

Responsiveness

Finally, your logo must look good on all mediums and screen sizes. Whether it is a letterhead, business card, packaging, stationery, mobile device or jumbotron. Your logo must be adaptable to these mediums and screen sizes. This consistency is important so it is easy for customers to recognize your brand.
